Self-Publishing Success Stories: Ellen Fisher

Excerpt from Road To Romance "ELLEN FISHER ~ Spotlight Interview with Tracey West ~~"

Was your journey to publication a difficult one?  What was your first book published?

Ellen – My first published romance was The Light in the Darkness (Bantam, 1998).  I submitted it to every New York publisher out there and it was flatly rejected by everyone.  (There were more New York publishers back then-- I think I accumulated eight or nine rejections.)  At last, just when I had pretty much given up hope, I got “the call” from Bantam, and I was ecstatic.  Unfortunately, they rejected my next book, putting me pretty much back where I started!
[. . . .]
But nowadays I wouldn’t focus so much on trying to sell to New York—it’s great for writers that there are so many alternatives now.  Every romance doesn’t fit neatly into the categories that New York publishers prefer, and e-publishers are a lot more likely to accept books that are a little different—like the colonial romances I write.

The author generously shared her sales number with other writers on the Kindle Boards Writers' Cafe.

I've sold over 100,000 over the course of two years of indie publishing, but that's under two pen names. Not sure that each of them separately has sold 50,000.  Also, that's spread over quite a few titles (up to 21 now).

  1. Thank you for featuring me! I have to point out, though, that this interview is actually from around 2003, and in it I'm talking about e-publishing with small presses, not self-publishing (this was long before the Kindle came along!). I still have to echo the sentiment, though; New York publication is fine if you want to pursue that route, but there are more alternatives than ever, and that's a great thing for writers.
